Downtown Easton, PA

11-16-07---Looking north from the eastbound walkway of the US 22 Toll Bridge over the Delaware River between PA and NJ. I think this is what is called Weygodt Mountain/Gap. Correct me if I am wrong on this. The Delaware Water Gap in the Blue Mountain is at least 15 miles north of this point. The Paxinosa Inn was on top of this hill back in the 1920s and the view was magnificent, especially way back then without all of the suburban sprawl we have now. For photos of the view from the Paxinosa Inn, see my Set "Old Postcards of Easton and Phillipsburg".

Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry, Storm on the Hortobágy, 1903, detail 1

Tivadar Kosztka Csontváry, Storm on the Hortobágy, 1903, detail 1

The Hungarian painter Csontvary was born in Sabinov, Saris county, Slovakia in 1853, having his best creative period between 1902-1909. In spite of painter?s studies in Munich and Paris, Csontvary never stopped painting in his extraordinary naive style. Art lovers with taste for expressionism would undoubtedly prefer Csontvary to Henri Rousseau (so would I). In the "Storm on Hortobagy" note the interesting contrast between round arches of a bridge and the row of V-shaped cattle?s horns. Note also a whip, the most important pictorial element as well as the most prominent linear feature (placed between two colour fields) , which is here a metaphor of the storm.

Concert on the square picnic

It had been 8 years or so since I flew my kite and camera into the Concert on the Square site around the Capitol. It takes just the right wind to feel comfortable in that location and I thought tonight was going to be right. As I worked my way in I discovered that the wind was lighter away from the Monona shore and although the kite was happy up there it couldn't lift the camera. So I went back out to the rooftop of Monona Terrace and hung out for a while. As I had hoped I noted a wind shift and just a tiny bit more wind so I headed back up MLK Blvd to get this shot.

CASA DEI PINI

Ph. Paolo Bolletta

Location: Petrignano d'Assisi

Edificio dalle strutture gentilizie. Le sue linee architettoniche si rifanno in tutto e per tutto al fenomeno di casa di campagna, tanto cara alla civilta contadina tra il 1700-1800.

I Told You So

I Told You So

This goes down in history as the Weirdest Hotel Painting Ever. Amidst the otherwise unremarkable floral scenes, pastorals and, yes, other normal boats, this crazy painting stood in the payphone alcove of the lobby of the Ramada Inn near the Portland Airport. I chanced upon it while Tim was checking us in the night before he left for the Philippines.

The title of the painting is "I Told You So"; the painter's name is Miracle.

The Don CeSar LDH4 49182

The Don CeSar LDH4 49182

The Don Cesar Hotel on St Pete Beach, Florida, looms over the city of Tierra Verde. The Don Cesar was built by Thomas Rowe in 1928, to realize his dream of owning a pink castle. It cost him 1.2 million dollars, which was 300% over his budget. After Rowe died, his estranged wife inherited the hotel, which she later lost due to back taxes. In 1942, the Army bought the hotel for $450 and turned it into a convelescent home for World War II airmen. After the war, it became a Veterans' Administration building. The Army stripped the beautiful fountain and all of its luxuries. In 1967, the building was abandonned by the Army and it became an eyesoar sitting on beautiful St Pete Beach. A preservation group rescued the Don CeSar by locating a buyer who would return the hotel to its former grandeur. Don CeSar was reopened in 1973 as a luxury resort. Renovation and revitalization projects have enhanced the hotel over the years. Recently a $20 million enhancement project revitalized the lobby with rich mahogany accents. Guest rooms received a makeover as well. It is said that the Don CeSar is haunted.
